Heritage Glazing

Glass has played a defining role in architecture for centuries, from the vibrant stained windows of medieval churches to the careful restoration of historic buildings today. Its lasting appeal lies in its ability to connect past craftsmanship with modern innovation, helping to preserve the distinctive character of heritage structures.

A closer look at the façade of any fine historic building reveals the unique qualities of original window glass. Unlike modern alternatives, traditional glass subtly distorts reflections, catching and scattering light in a way that creates a lively, sparkling effect. These qualities contribute significantly to the charm and personality of older buildings.

Prior to 1900, most glass was hand-blown, making it impossible to produce perfectly flat panes. Even the most skilled craftsmen created glass with natural imperfections, such as slight waves or folds known as “ream,” and tiny air bubbles called “seeds.” Far from flaws, these features are the defining characteristics of authentic, hand-crafted glass.

In contrast, the development of the float glass process over the past four decades has produced perfectly smooth, uniform glass. While technically superior, this consistency can diminish the visual richness of period buildings, stripping away their distinctive sparkle and character. For this reason, selecting the appropriate glass is essential when restoring historic windows.

We offer supply and installation of heritage glass suitable for buildings from the Elizabethan era through to the reign of George V.

Our range includes two main types of period window glass. Genuine hand-blown cylinder glass - ideal for matching existing original cylinder glass, whether replacing broken panes or replicating traditional sash windows. When authenticity is paramount, this is the preferred option.

Alternatively, period-style window glass provides a more cost-effective solution. Machine manufactured, this glass is designed to replicate the gentle waviness of traditional glass, it is well suited for full window or façade glazing where original glass is no longer present and a high level of historical accuracy is not required.
